Finally! We have internet! Here comes our first entry about our new life in Langkawi Island, Malaysia. So far the island treats us nicely (besides the 4 week fight to get internet which needed drastic ways, which I rather not talk about. But nobody got hurt, and now we just enjoy our pretty fast internet, hoping that it will last long, because in this area there are quite some thefts of the internet copper cables). Anyway. About our life here: We live on a fruit farm in the middle of the island, with lots of Rambutan, Durian, Cempedak, some coconut palms and mangos. The land belongs to a Chinese man and the German woman Eva we are working with rents it dirt-cheap from him. There are 2 wooden houses, with only one room each. One of them is our new home. Then there is the community building with a kitchen, an office and the bathroom. No toilet paper. No hot water. Amazing how fast one gets used to it. We are living here with some animals: the dog Rebecca who is sick and gets treatment from us, the young white fluffy cat Poseidon, who is the best friend of the dog and often gives him a massage, and a few days ago we found a tiny little black kitten on the street, running helplessly across the cars. We grabbed it and drove it home on our scooter. We named him Carlo, after our good friend in Italy who is taking care of my cat Tiger. We are working with Eva, and the project is to build up a healthy lunch cafe, where we also produce food products like pesto, hummus etc, and we also give cooking classes. That is our basic and we will try our best to make it work. So far we had already our test lunch which has been a big success, and tomorrow will be the first cooking class. Besides that, I sometimes help on the boats of Eva and her husband Gerd, where I am helping to prepare the food for the charter guests. Quite a nice job, sailing through the islands of Langkawi. The landscape is really beautiful, the people very friendly and open, and almost everyone speaks English. For a while we had some volunteers who stayed at the other house, but right now it is just us and the animals. And the durian. It is durian season right now, and I'm loving it! And of course the coconuts, the fresh young ones and the mature ones. And the mangos, pineapples, sengkuan etc. The Malaysian food is pretty fatty and unhealthy, but there are some healthy traditional options like the Laksa Soup which is already my favorite. Right now we are starting to create our vegetable garden and build a chicken house,to produce our own food. So far we really like it. It is kind of a mix of the orient and pirates of the Caribbean. In the morning we hear the muezzin, followed by the roosters. And at night the frogs. |
